Description
Honorary pedestal in the shape of a rectangular cube of limestone that must have been crowned by the figure of the emperor Numerian. Currently the epigraphic field is lost because of erosion, but in the sixteenth century Pons d'Icart could document the inscription: NOBIL(isimo)·CAESAR(i) / FIL(io)·[D(omini)]·N(ostri)·IMP(eratoris)·[M(arci)] / AVR(elii)·[C]ARI·AVG(USTI) / OR[DO] [I]ESSONEN[S(ium)]. The text refers to the tribute of the authorities of Iesso to Caesar Marcus Aurelius Numerian, son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Carus. This pedestal was known as the watchman's stone, because for centuries it was located in the vaults of the square, and was the place where the watchman of the town could be found.
