Description
Attic bell-shaped krater with red figures, which only lacks a few fragments of the body (which has caused the loss of part of the figurative decoration) and one of the handles. Firstly there are the three elements repeated in the vast majority of bell-shaped kraters with red figures: a garland of bay leaves under the rim, the border of the leaves encircling the base of the handles, and the horizontal strip of fretwork and squares that form the base of the figurative scenes with mythological figures. Regarding the decoration, the front represents a scene with four naked male characters, with crowns of plants and carrying torches, three naked young men and one with a beard playing the lyre with the plectrum, interpreted as a scene of nocturnal komos, the festival or ritual procession in honour of Dionysus. The other side consists of three standing male characters in a scene where they are talking, wearing a ribbon around their heads and covering their naked bodies with a himation (tunic). The krater is attributed to both the workshop of Cleophon (in the case of the scenes) and to that of the painter of Pothos (because of its style).
