Description
Ceramic bowl in the shape of a female bust representing the goddess Demeter. It lacks all the front part above the forehead. It finishes in a basket (kalathos) 18 mm high, below which opens a veil, consisting of wings on the front and at the base of the neck, on both sides of the face. The fabric is dark pink clay, hard, and sometimes remains of ochre slip are preserved. There are various opinions about its functionality and therefore there are also several names for its identification. Some accept it as a recipient for cream perfumes, oils or other scents (hence the name incense burner or thymateria, while others identify it as a container for grain and other plants and hence the name of vase or kernos.
