Description
Milestone. Sandstone column with cylindrical body. It lacks the base and the top is broken. It presents 16 lines of inscription commemorating the repair of the path in the reign of Emperor Maximinus. Despite its poor condition and the little that remains of the inscription, it can easily be transcribed and developed, since the finish of each line indicates that this is a very specific emperor, Maximinus (Gaius Iulius Cesar Maximinus), who ruled from AD 235 to 238. Twenty milestones throughout the Iberian Peninsula with an almost identical formula will confirm this. The complete reading is: "The Emperor Gaius Caesar Augustus lulius Verus Maximinus, pious, fortunate, August, maximum Germanicus, maximum Dacic, maximum Sarmàtic, maximum Potífex coated tribunicia Powers and five times ta Imperial September Consul, Proconsul; and Caius lulius Verus Maximus, most noble Caesar, maximum Germanicus, maximum Dacic, maximum Sarmàtic, Prince of Youth, son of our lord the Emperor Gaius lulius Verus Maximinus, rebuilt roads and bridges ruined because of their age. In charge, Quinto Decius Valerian Augustus's Legate Pro Praetor, very clear male." The interpretation of the inscription refers to a very interesting fact about Quintus Decius Valerian, legatus Augusti pro Praetoria Virclarissimus. We are indeed facing a major character, the Governor of the Province of Tarragona during the tenure of Maximinus. The Legatus Augusti pro Praetoria was appointed by the emperor for the government of a province. The milestone was found in the current North Hotel Girona, in the Sarria de Ter (Girona, Girona).
