Description
The piece is complete, but broken into seven pieces and thus restored. It has the form of a pelta shaped like a crescent with both ends finishing in griffin heads and crowned in the centre by a palmette. Both sides of the pelta are decorated with low reliefs: the obverse depicting two dolphins entangled by the tail dipping into the sea; and the reverse with a theatrical mask. They were decorative but also ritual elements, which were hung as offerings to various deities in connection with festivals and other ceremonies.
