Description
Hairpin or acus crinalis with a part that represents a nude female figure that is very simple and stylized in its execution, but very effective decoratively. Although it has a rough and archaic point and the face is poorly defined, the incisions define the body better. The figure rests on a pedestal that separates the handle from the hairpin. The back of the figure is very little worked and does not have much relief. Rather than the representation of a woman, it would seem that it is a small sculpture of Venus combing or holding her hair, in a scene of feminine hygiene, a very recurrent theme in the pieces of the dressing table of a Roman domina. This type of hairpin was used to decorate and hold the updo or bun of the hairstyle. A hairpin almost identical to this one was found in Pompeii.
