Description
Nearly whole cup with black varnish, originally from the Italian region of Campania. In the form of a hemispherical krater, it is deep with a wide, open mouth with an everted rim and a lip moulding with impressed decoration of a frieze of ovals. The annular foot is high and moulded. Under the edge, two handles in applied relief are attached to the body, and form part of the decorative scheme of the goblet, imitating the forms of metal goblets with relief. This is a typical middle stage of Cales black varnish productions. It has been interpreted that its use could be related to the preparation and service of liquids.
